GOVERNANCE AT GVP SCHOOL

School board

The Foundation for the Promotion of Secondary Education in St. Eustatius is the competent authority of the GvP School. The aim of the Foundation is to promote secondary education “without distinction of religion, following and considering the wishes of the parents about religious education and in compliance with the applicable legal requirements.”

The Foundation is managed by a school board of at least 5 and a maximum of 7 members, all of whom must reside on St. Eustatius. Two members of the school board function as executive board members:
Mrs. C. Berkel-Dembrook and Ms. C. Woodley. The remaining members of the school board function as supervisory board members. The school board is supported by a staff officer, Mr. C. Lindo.

Good governance, integrity, and accountability

The Supervisory and Executive Board members are responsible for the development and implementation of good governance and compliance with the Good Governance Code.
The GvP School is a community school, offering inclusive education, and we take this responsibility very seriously. The School Board is committed to providing transparency about the operations and governance at our school and providing accountability to our community in an open and clear manner. We achieve this through:

  • Publication of important documents and reports: We ensure that important documents and reports are accessible to anyone interested in GvP School. This includes the GvP School Annual Report, the GvP School Plan 2022-2026, and evaluations and results of our education.
  • Open Dialogue: We maintain an active and open dialogue with our students and their parents/guardians, our teachers and support staff, and our external stakeholders. Through regular information and consultation meetings, and feedback sessions and surveys, we ensure that all voices are heard and that we work together to continuously improve our school and education.
  • Compliance with the Good Governance Code: We operate in accordance with the Good Governance Code and explain any deviations from this in our annual report. This means we are committed to principles of good governance, integrity, and accountability.

The Board trusts that with this approach of transparency and openness, we not only meet our obligations to the GvP School community but also create an environment in which our education can further improve.

President of the school board’s address

Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and the entire GvP family,

Welcome to the beginning of a new and exciting chapter at GvP School for the school year 2024-2025! It is with great enthusiasm and a sense of optimism that I write this note to you. We are about to embark on a journey of learning, growth, and discovery—a journey we can only accomplish together. A new school year is not just a mark on the calendar; it is a canvas of opportunities waiting to be painted with our aspirations, efforts, and achievements. As we step onto these grounds once again or for the very first time, let us be reminded of the incredible potential that lies within each one of us. Each step we take should bring us closer to realizing our dreams.

To our returning students, welcome back! Your presence enriches our school  community, and your experiences here contribute to the tapestry of knowledge and camaraderie that we cherish. Embrace this year with the same zeal that has carried you thus far, and let your achievements continue to inspire us all.

To our new students, a special welcome! You are now part of a vibrant community that values curiosity,
collaboration, and compassion. Your fresh perspectives and unique talents are what make our school a diverse and dynamic place to learn and grow. As you navigate through these new surroundings, remember that you are not alone. Our school is a family, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

To our dedicated teachers and staff, thank you for your unwavering commitment to education. Your dedication is the cornerstone upon which our students’ dreams are built. Your passion for teaching and your guidance shapes their future, and for that, we are truly grateful. For the new incoming teachers, welcome and we look forward to your wisdom being shared with all of us.

As we venture into this academic year, let us embrace the challenges with a spirit of resilience, see every obstacle as an opportunity, and approach every lesson with an eagerness to learn. Let kindness be our guiding principle, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding that makes our school a second home for all. Let this year be one of growth, both academically and personally. Let us foster connections, cultivate talents, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Together, let’s create a learning environment where everyone feels safe, valued, empowered, and inspired to reach their full potential.

As we open the doors to the 2024-2025 school year, let us step forward with hope in our hearts and determination in our minds. Let us create a year that we can all be proud of—one that is defined by achievements, laughter, and the shared pursuit of knowledge. Welcome, one and all, to the GvP School year 2024-2025. Let’s make it extraordinary!

Warm regards,

Ms. Clarsina Rivers-Berkel
